iSaahasi Academy opened its doors for the inaugural class of returning learners in June 2016. We’re a young organization, and we continue to develop new programs as we track our students’ progress, evaluate the efficacy of our projects, and observe bumps and successes with our current curriculum. Though our program is new, the planning, researching, and creation process has been years in the making.
Our founder started working on this project in 2007, when she first learned of a missing resource for female education in India–safe and sophisticated institutions where adult women can return to learning after experiencing a hiatus in their education. Since 2007, our team has investigated existing learning programs in the area, analyzed best practices for educating learners from varying backgrounds, and gotten to know many, many women interested in going back to learning & growth. We’ve listened to a wide range of stories and collectively brainstormed how to structure programming that would honor every student’s experience with education and meet each student’s specific needs. Through the comprehensive research we conducted, we were able to develop initial plans for our learning program–curricula, policies, and specialized learning tracks–and we hired new staff to push our plans further and, eventually, bring them to life.
We’ve taken our time figuring out the best way to provide adult women with the most effective program, a thoughtful and empowering community, and a respectful space conducive to learning. This year, we’re proud to say that we’ve finally entered the implementation phase. Our first class has advanced into their second semester and we’ve already seen immense progress. Several students have accelerated to higher reading levels, we’ve adjusted lessons to match students’ enthusiasm for Hindi class, and we’ve observed the prowess with which students complete their mathematics assignments. We’re addressing hiccups–subjects where students struggle most–and hiring more staff to give students more focused attention with an instructor or counselor.
